Women have a long tradition of giving to charity, but it’s only lately that so many are becoming
philanthropists --that is, giving in strategic ways that wield influence, secure seats at policy tables
and gain a voice in setting social standards. Real-life stories about how women today are stepping
up to give time, talent, treasure and technology that is transforming communities and
re-making the global economy.
The rise in women’s wealth and consumer muscle has spawned an armada of preachy books
and media
know-it-alls. Yet few gurus or tools address true drivers of women’s relationship
to money
—
the
love/hate, the push/pull, the retail therapy/fortress issues. Understanding these
underlying
motivations and
adopting seven key lessons can lead women
to take charge of their
decisions and their dough. Ultimately, the
path for women's independence and giving runs right
through smart personal finances.
The culture screams that success stems from money and celebrity status. As a result,
families at every income level are wrestling with how
to nurture children’s empathy and work ethic.
Teaching kids
the value of a buck and the lessons
of giving isn't about wealth or how much you
give. It's about
modeling the behavior you want to see. This address speaks to how to instill
money-management skills and how to empower kids to become lifelong givers.

Getting media attention for women's giving has been an uphill struggle. Outdated perceptions
that women run bake
sales and men run philanthropy are hard to shake. A look at current
coverage of women’s
philanthropy
and what nonprofits, donors, business associations, universities
and other stakeholders need to do to earn ongoing press, including how organizations can
overcome women’s reluctance to be in the spotlight and
an interactive session of tools and tactics.

Gender matters. Research shows that gender is a critical factor in behavior
and motivations for giving. These documented differences, as well as old-time conventions
and blind spots, explain why women’s philanthropic potential isn’t being tapped. Plus,
when women do give, practitioners often fail to recognize the contributions. An eye-opening
workshop to help practitioners and fundraising professionals identify, engage,
encourage and measure women’s philanthropic contributions going forward.
